FAQ

There is no difference - they're all the same thing, just different names used across different industries.

Whatever you call it, it's the face of your AC duct: it covers the opening and directs airflow into the room. At Cryptic Air, we just make a version that doesn't look like an eyesore.

A linear slot diffuser is a modern, long, narrow vent installed in your ceiling, wall, or floor that pushes conditioned air into a room. Instead of blasting air in one direction, it distributes airflow evenly, quietly and without drafts. The diffusers have adjustable louvers so you can control where the air goes. They're standard in homes, offices, hotels, and anywhere a clean, consistent airflow matters.

Two scenarios, both straightforward:

1. Replacing an existing vent? Measure the opening in your wall or ceiling. That measurement is typically your diffuser size.

2. New construction? The sizes are usually listed on the MEP plans. If you're not sure, send us the plans and we'll figure it out for you at no charge.

Just your duct opening size, that's it.

  1. Unscrew and remove your existing vent cover
  2. Measure the open duct hole (width x length)
  3. Enter those measurements when ordering, we cut to size at no extra charge

Not sure about your measurements? Contact us at info@cryptic-air.com or 786-629-9699 and we'll walk you through it.

Cryptic Slot is our framed linear diffuser, installs after drywall, fits standard plenum boxes, built for straightforward HVAC setups. Durable, clean, and easy to work with on residential and commercial projects.

Cryptic Pro is a different product entirely. It goes in during framing, gets mudded into the drywall, and disappears completely into the ceiling. No visible frame, no edge, just the slot. It's also built from a non-aluminum material, which eliminates the condensation issues that aluminum vents cause on high-end builds.

Both are engineered for smooth, quiet airflow. The difference comes down to your installation timeline and your design goal.

You don't need any special tools. Inside the slot you'll find directional blades. A small flat screwdriver or even your finger is all it takes to adjust them, control the direction of airflow, control how much air comes through, done. Simple adjustment, precise control.

CFM, which stands for Cubic Feet per Minute, is the commonly used metric to quantify airflow. When we calculate CFM, we use an Effective Velocity of 9.8 feet per second, which is the recognized norm in the industry. When considering rooms, which are measured in cubic feet, the industry standard is that a room should be cooled in less than 4 minutes. For instance, a room with a volume of 1000 cubic feet (10 feet x 10 feet x 10 feet) ideally requires a vent with a rating of at least 260 CFM or more.

Short answer, no. A properly designed linear diffuser shouldn't restrict airflow in any way that affects comfort. The key word is designed properly, which is exactly how ours are built. Every Cryptic Air diffuser is engineered for smooth air distribution so your system performs the way it should.
