Mud-in diffusers create a flush drywall detail without a visible outer frame. For builders and contractors, the key is to coordinate that finish with the project’s airflow requirements, duct connection, and installation sequence. A trimless appearance is not, by itself, a measure of airflow performance.
Cryptic Pro is our frameless mud-in diffuser. It is mudded in while the drywall is open and is not a drop-in replacement for an existing vent. Cryptic Slot is our framed, surface-mounted retrofit and replacement line.

What to Confirm
Cryptic Pro
Flush drywall finish with no visible frame.
Mudded in while the drywall is open.
The selected model’s dimensions, duct connection, clearance, and finishing requirements.
Cryptic Slot
A visible white frame with black adjustable louvers inside the slots.
Surface-mounted after drywall into a matching opening.
The opening size, neck and face dimensions, mounting method, and rated airflow for the selected configuration.
1. Coordinate the Flush Finish Before Drywall Finishing
Cryptic Pro is a non-aluminum mud-in diffuser that finishes flush with the drywall. Plan its position, duct connection, and installation clearance with the HVAC and drywall teams while the drywall is open.
Review the installation requirements for the selected model before finishing the surrounding surface. Do not treat Cryptic Pro as a cover that can simply replace a grille in an existing opening.
Approved contractor accounts can order Cryptic Pro online. All other customers should call 786-629-9699 to order.
2. Keep Cryptic Pro and Cryptic Slot Specifications Separate
Cryptic Slot is an aluminum diffuser with a white powder-coated frame and black anodized adjustable louvers. Its visible flange overlaps the finished surface, and it is secured using a mounting bracket or concealed screws through the flange. It is not a frameless mud-in product.
For example, the 1-slot Cryptic Slot fits a 2-inch nominal opening and has a 1-inch-wide air slot. It belongs to the framed product family, not the Cryptic Pro range. Select its length and check the rated airflow for that exact size rather than choosing it solely because a room is small or narrow.
For an existing opening, remove the old cover and measure the opening rather than the outside of its frame. Measure at both ends and the middle, and use the smallest measurement in each direction. Compare the result with the selected Cryptic Slot model’s opening, neck, and face dimensions.
3. Check Airflow Requirements Alongside the Ceiling Design
The Air Conditioning Contractors of America’s Manual T: Air Distribution Basics covers selecting, sizing, and locating air outlets and return inlets. Its scope includes air patterns, throw, velocity, pressure loss, and sound. Use this guidance with the project’s mechanical design and the selected product’s available data.
For Cryptic Slot, rated airflow in cubic feet per minute, or CFM, depends on both slot count and length. The rated CFM is listed on each product page. A slot count alone does not establish whether a diffuser meets a room’s airflow requirements.
For projects with specified throw, noise criteria (NC), or pressure-drop requirements, confirm the documentation needed with the design team. Cryptic Air does not publish lab-tested results for those measures. Cryptic Slot’s published CFM figures are ratings, not a substitute for those test results.
4. Confirm What Custom Sizing Means for Your Product
Cryptic Slot offers custom lengths at no upcharge. Its nominal opening width is determined by slot count in 2-inch increments, from a 2-inch opening for 1 slot to a 24-inch opening for 12 slots. Width is not custom-cut to an arbitrary measurement, and the visible face is wider than the nominal opening.
Do not apply Cryptic Slot’s sizing rules to Cryptic Pro. Confirm the dimensions and available length options for the selected Pro model with our team, including the matching duct connection and required clearance.
5. Coordinate the Plenum and Duct Connection
A plenum box connects the ductwork to the diffuser. It is a separate part of the air-distribution assembly, not an alternative to the visible diffuser.
Our R6 insulated plenum boxes are made from foil-faced fiberglass duct board and built to match the diffuser order. Have the installer confirm the box dimensions, inlet arrangement, and available space. For Cryptic Pro, confirm the matching plenum requirements and order contents with our team rather than assuming that a box is included.
Plenum boxes for 1, 2, and 3-slot configurations are available online. For 4-slot and larger configurations, call 786-629-9699.
A properly sized plenum is recommended for a new installation. A Cryptic Slot retrofit may use the existing opening and ductwork, so a new Cryptic plenum is not automatically required for every replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a mud-in diffuser?
A mud-in diffuser is integrated into the drywall finish rather than mounted with a visible frame over the finished surface. Cryptic Pro is our frameless mud-in line. It is installed while the drywall is open and is not a drop-in replacement for an existing vent.
Can custom sizes be ordered for linear slot diffusers?
Cryptic Slot offers custom lengths at no upcharge, with nominal opening widths set by slot count. For Cryptic Pro, confirm the selected model’s dimensions and available length options with our team before ordering.
How long does delivery take?
Lead times are listed on each product page. Check the information for your selected configuration when coordinating the installation schedule, and contact our team with questions about a custom order.
Does a plenum box guarantee quiet, even airflow?
No. A plenum is part of the duct-to-diffuser connection, not a guarantee of room performance. Diffuser selection, airflow requirements, and installation details also need to be reviewed. Do not rely on a matching box alone to establish noise or airflow performance.
Do modern vent covers restrict airflow?
Diffuser selection affects air distribution, pressure loss, and sound. Appearance alone does not establish performance. Review the required airflow and the available data for the exact configuration with your HVAC contractor. For Cryptic Slot, check the rated CFM for the selected slot count and length.
