Why throw distance matters. The throw distance on the chart tells you how far the exiting air travels before it drops into the room. Match throw to the largest room dimension. If throw is short of the far wall, you get cold spots at the wall. If throw exceeds the room, air recirculates and you feel drafts.

Step 1. Get your required CFM per linear foot. Take the room's total CFM (from Manual J) and divide by the diffuser length you are planning to use. Example: 400 CFM room, planning a 4-foot diffuser, needs 100 CFM per linear foot.
Step 2. Find the row for your slot width. CFM charts organize rows by slot width (3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch). Locate the row matching the diffuser you are considering.
Step 3. Read across to the CFM column. Find the column that matches your target CFM per foot. That intersection gives you three numbers: throw distance, NC rating, and static pressure drop.
Step 4. Verify NC (noise criteria) is acceptable. Residential should stay under NC 25 at design flow. Commercial can go up to NC 30 or 35 in high-activity spaces. If the diffuser is rated NC 30 at 100 CFM per foot and you are in a bedroom, size up: wider slot, longer diffuser, or more diffusers.
Step 5. Verify throw distance matches the room. Throw should reach the opposite wall or design zone. If throw is 15 feet and your room is 20 feet, you get cold spots. Size up throw by using a narrower slot at the same CFM per foot (throw increases as slot narrows).
Step 6. Note the static pressure drop. Add it to your total system static pressure. If measured static exceeds the air handler's rated capacity, the system runs poorly regardless of diffuser choice.
